What began as a silly idea one day grew into something massive! If I had known what the journey would entail beforehand, I’m sure I would have never started. But now, looking back, I’m so glad I took that step. The challenges and successes have shaped the path to where we are today.
Starting from nothing, MULU has become a recognized brand in both casual and sportswear, now selling in over ten countries. Our collections cater to women, men, and soon, children. This growth has been incredible, and it's a testament to the hard work and passion behind every piece we create.
We've also taken a significant step by acquiring our own manufacturing facility. This move not only supports our expansion but also allows us to manufacture for other brands and offer wholesale services. Having control over our production process ensures the highest quality for our products and helps other businesses grow. MULU’s journey is a story of perseverance, innovation, and community, and I couldn’t be prouder of how far we’ve come.
I launched my clothing brand, MULU, on my birthday, October 26th. As a plus-size powerlifter, I struggled to find gym wear that fit right. Stores only offered sizes up to extra large, which didn’t work for me.
During my maternity leave, I started designing clothes. Even though I had no background in fashion, I connected with a manufacturer to create samples. I wore my colorful designs to the gym, and they quickly caught people's eyes. Soon, others were interested, and that’s how MULU was born.
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, my manufacturer faced big challenges. To keep things going, I bought the manufacturing business. This move allowed me to scale from a few countries to over 10 and continue expanding today.
Now, I focus on helping startups and scale-ups instead of large-scale corporate manufacturing. With my firsthand experience in the industry, I’m ready to guide new brands toward success.
A: Begin by identifying your niche and target market. Research the industry and your competition thoroughly. Next, create a solid business plan outlining your goals, strategies, and financial projections. Secure funding, if necessary, and start designing your clothing line. Establish a relationship with a reliable manufacturer, and begin with a small, manageable collection. Lastly, develop a strong brand identity and start marketing your products online and through social media.
A: To scale your clothing brand, focus on building a strong online presence and leveraging social media marketing. Expand your product line to cater to a broader audience while maintaining quality and brand identity. Utilize influencer marketing and collaborations to increase brand visibility. Invest in efficient supply chain management and consider acquiring your own manufacturing facility, as MULU did, to ensure quality and scalability.
A: The cost to start a clothing brand can vary widely based on several factors, including the scope of your initial collection, quality of materials, manufacturing costs, marketing, and operational expenses. A small-scale startup might require anywhere from $10,000 to $50,000, while a more ambitious launch could exceed $100,000.
A: While formal education can provide valuable skills and knowledge, it is not strictly necessary to succeed in fashion designing. Many successful designers, including me, have built their brands through self-teaching, practical experience, and mentorship.
A: To start a clothing brand, you'll need a unique brand identity, a well-defined target market, and a solid business plan. Essential components also include design skills or access to a designer, a reliable manufacturer, a marketing strategy, and an e-commerce platform or retail strategy for selling your products.
A: You can learn fashion designing through various online platforms, such as YouTube, Udemy, Coursera, and specialized fashion design websites. These platforms offer courses that cover everything from basic design principles to advanced techniques.
